Bringing bright colors to our home

Started painting the hallway last night as part of the main floor painting project I plan to achieve this summer.

First thing to do was pick the color palette. We used two very difference greens in the bedroom and upstairs bath, both of which are calm and comforting, so I wanted to try something very different with our main living area.

I ran across this photo which was ultimately the perfect color palette for the living room and main level area.

Our trip to Home Depot was a little more interesting than usual, not because of trying to pick colors, because that happened rather quickly.

Rather, I suffered a minor period of confusion about what amount of paint we would need and I was very confused about what size this paint bucket was.
One gallon.

I thought for some reason it was a five-gallon bucket, not a one-gallon bucket, and the paint associate kept telling me she did not have the right kind of paint to make the color I wanted in the five-gallon base. I knew I needed at least two buckets, most likely three or four by the time I as done and so I was trying to get four five-gallon buckets of the yellow today. Note to self, one gallon of paint is about the same size as a gallon of milk! After much embarrassment over finally realizing my error, we came home with just two one-gallon buckets.

Now to get rid of those white walls.

Prep myself first. For any painting project I wear my long-sleeve scrubs and scrub pants, plus a bandana to protect hair. As this process moves along I will really appreciate this before the first coat is done too.

Step one, taping. Why are there FIVE doorways in my hallway?

Step two, prepare to paint. The idea was to protect the carpet. We plan to pull the carpet out, but I was TRYING to not get paint all over the floor. I did not succeed.

Before you laugh, I challenge you to paint the ceiling with just a roller. It does not work anywhere near as easily or nicely as the demo videos showed.

First coat of paint in hallway. Yellow!

The new and the old. Compared the yellow that is current, our new yellow is BRIGHT and I like it a lot more.

Today I will finish with the second coat of paint. I get to try out using the crazy folding ladder we got last summer since I could not reach all the places in the top corner of the hallway with my roller stick yesterday.

Update 9pm.
Finished painting the walls. Had to use scary ladder to do it. It is lovely!

Why I needed the fancy ladder. I missed some of the high spots.

Fancy ladder. For all the things I have done that would make you think I don’t scare easily (I have been skydiving three times), standing on this really made me nervous!

All done! Well, mostly. I need to paint the doors white and touch up all the trim, but the walls are done.
All done!
