TTSL DAILY day 5: Kettle ball swings and all the squats, but really…I’m fine.

I spent all day looking at the exercises for tonight and stressing about the STRENGTH and METCON parts yet when I actually got started it took me 26 minutes to get through the warm up and that was without doing the squat with a plate mobility work. I feel like that was a pretty intense warm up and that wasn’t even the hardest part yesterday.

I did a total of 55 squats with a “weighted barbell” on my back. And then I did 90 kettle ball swings. There were sections of this workout that I feel I totally failed at, but those two things I am very proud of.

Today I am hating how many stairs there are in my house and how many of my chores incolve running up and down those dang stairs. My legs don’t want to work at all.

But really, I’m fine.

Day 4: “Active Rest Day” and All I wanna do is Bicycle!! Because fat bottomed girls make the rocking world go round.

I don’t have any green workout gear to wear yet (come on Medusa print capris, arrive at my door already) and hate the idea of St Patrick chasing snakes since I keep snakes and adore all my slithery friends, but in keeping the the holiday spirit I shall enjoy a Guinness tonight.

TTSL Daily #3: hopping is for the damn bunnies

TTSL Day 3.  I really hope the zombies we are training to outrun are the slow shambling ones from the original Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Cardio is so hard for me with my COPD.

My heartrate was through the roof trying to DO ALL THE HOPS in the warm up so I knew this would be hard.  I did better than I thought during the step up variation.  No rower at home so I had to “sprint” which is just slightly  faster speed walking than normal.

But I did it. 😊

TTSL Day 2: Inchworms are worse than situps?

I made it through day 2 of my first TTSL daily cycle. Who knew I would despise inchworms so much? I despise them almost as much as the 40 situps I did in lieu of “toe to bar”.

Surprisingly I enjoyed the toe taps in lieu of single unders! I was breathing mighty hard after 3 reps of 75, but I did them. Not bad at all.

TTSL Day 1: Hateful Burpees

I just survived my first ever Thick Thighs Save Lives (TTSL) Daily workout. I thought I’d have trouble with the “running” which I knew would be walking on the treadmill but it was the damn burpee’s that’s just about did me in. I hate burpees.

Someone in one of my reptile groups posted about some super cool reptile print pants she got from the CVG website. That of course led me to some “window shopping” and when I found the Venom and Medusa prints, I knew I would absolutely need to buy a pair of each.

Then I join the “Fitness Programming by CVG” fb group for some inspiration. I’ve been meaning to get back to working out for some time now although my idea of working out has been yoga and the treadmill with some PT exercises; I’ve enjoyed the posts and thought it would be nice to get to the point of doing these workouts like those ladies are.

So I just signed up for something that is 6 weeks long and has running in it? WHAT WAS I THINKING??

I have no idea what I’m doing and I don’t understand what half of these words mean on the first day, but I’m tired of hurting and feeling weak and so I’m going to give this a try.

I’ve never considered myself an athlete. I taught ATS belly dance for over a decade and even got my 200hr YTT during that time, but I also have COPD which slows my ability to do heavy cardio. But I’m tenacious and I really got into hiking a couple years ago and was really getting my endurance up and then I had pretty intensive rotator cuff surgery including some “collarbone bone grinding” in Dec 2020 and I’m still dealing with after-effects.

But I’m tenacious. I spent last summer doing more local hikes and trying backpacking with a 40lb pack (bear canisters and so much gear are a necessity up here in the Interior of Alaska). But I kept having to ditch out since my shoulder wasn’t up for it. At least I could hike! Slow and steady I kept doing it, until last fall when somehow I managed to tear my gastroc on the right calf and I’ve been sitting and feeling worse for months now.

No more. I’m older than I used to be, in the worst shape of my life and heavier than I’ve ever been, but I’m not done playing outside and I need to be strong to do that so here I am.

One year after the surgery

One year ago I had surgery on my shoulder. The incision is healed and I did twice the amount of PT that my insurance allowed.

I’m pretty sure this was a bad decision.

I’m still weak in this shoulder. I have pain regularly in my shoulder, collarbone area and bicep area. I have not been able to resume yoga. I can hold a down dog for a limited time, chatarunga is totally out of my abilities at this time. I did some hiking and attempted a single backpacking trip overnight and was exhausted by the time I got back.

But I won’t give up.

I’ll keep trying very, very small doses of yoga and pushing my arm to get stronger and dealing with pain and drinking my double Old Fashions to help me sleep.

I never ever want to have surgery again.

On Solo Adventures….

“Setting off on a grand adventure is the only way to pause our restless mind and find peace.” ~ Dyana Carmella https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lwo9fxM1wFI

She is a great story teller and creates beautiful videos while doing really hard things. I try to be as brave as she is with each new adventure.

Dyana is my idea of a modern day Wonder Woman, my childhood hero grown up and in real life.

Packrafting classes!

I just signed up for two days of packrafting in Eagle River the last weekend of June.

My shoulder will be strong enough to paddle by then, it must be.

Brooks Camp!

I just scored what looked like the last reservation for Brooks Camp for June 16-17. Now to figure out all the other logistics!

Feb 23: Needle for your thoughts?

It might not look like much, but it took a 45 minute MRI and another hour and a 1/2 at the doctor for them to tell me they don’t really know what’s wrong with this poor hand, but let’s shove a needle fill of steroids  in your wrist to see if it helps.

And apparently this is going to hurt really, really badly later and for up to 5 days. Because the last 3 days of crying have not been enough.
