Aurora hunting Jan 7-8: New camera & rented lens, but focus is still tricky!

Last night I went out to Chena Lakes at -20F and spent an hour shooting the aurora. Still learning to keep warm; especially keeping those feet warm is my biggest challenge right now. Also, I think I need to start carrying my gun with me since I scared myself with “noises from the woods” that I kept imagining was a bear (doubtful, yet plausible!), a moose or a mass murdered on the loose!

Also still learning to focus. I got to try out my new camera with a rented Rokinon lens last night. Even though I have no idea what I supposed to doing still with the lens, I’m already really glad I upgraded the camera body since it is so much easier to use. Focus is tricky!

Not sure I’ll have time to edit pics from last night until tonight and I might decide sleep is more important after I go to Cirque Du Soleil. In the meantime enjoy this silly selfie from last night!

Auroras Jan 3-4: Focus takes practice, plus a better lens

Second night out shooting auroras. This time I only stayed out just after midnight and didn’t even leave my house until about 10:15. As mentioned in a previous post, I was planning to drive out to Two Rivers for photos, but the auroras EXPLODED before I could make it out there so I stopped at Birch Hill, then Hagelberger and finally stopped at Weller Elementary before deciding I was tired and didn’t want to be out until 4am two night in a row.

There are 72 photos from this night, none are perfectly in focus, but these are my favorite photos from this night included here.  More in my gallery at http://www.perlgurl.net/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=7461

Before going out I had gone to our local camera place to see if I could get some help with focusing on stars, since that is what is important for shooting auroras. Neither Candy nor myself could get the stars to focus the night before (yes, we read the manual, yes we had the right setting for auroras, yes, we tried _that_ too, whatever you are thinking!). I thought maybe my lens was broken since it just spun around and around without a stopping point. Turns out that is how the lens works. But the lens, even though it is a wide-angle lens, just won’t get me what I need for auroras. Plus the dang thing was set on autofocus for manual settings in the MENU (who decided to put a setting like that in a menu and not on the lens is not a good user-interface person in my book!). Don’t get me wrong, the a3000 is a nice camera for entry level photography and the telescopic lens it came with in addition to the wide-angle lens was apparently a SUPER good deal, but it won’t focus on stars with what I’ve got which is what I want to do. I would need a better lens, but to get that lens I need to get an adapter for the a3000 plus buy a lens which could easily run $500 and if I’m going to spend that much money then I’m going to step up to a Sony 5100 or 6000. Not a full frame camera like the one Candy had rented the night before that took AMAZING photos, but it will focus at least! At least once I learn how to help it focus. So I’m going to return this camera and upgrade the body and get a decent lens.

I’m learning how to layer properly too. Tried different pants each night, and different boots too. So far I’m staying warm except for my feet. The first night I wore some boots that are supposed to be rated for -20 and though it was cold and windy that night, I don’t think it was quite that cold. The second night I wore my Sorels and it was -13 when I left my house downtown and my temp gauge changes from -19 to -1 during my driving around. Being on hills like where Weller is at is warmer for sure! I’ve got about four layers on top and my warmest jacket is a beast to zipper, but I do stay warm. Eventually I’d like to figure out a slightly more streamlined way of dressing so I don’t feel like Ralphie’s brother in the movie “A Christmas Story”, but it works for now!

The short version of this story is that tonight was just practice. Learning to frame, dealing with being outside in the cold by myself, etc. Which explains why most of these photos are not focused properly too.  When I get a better camera that can do what I need it to, then I expect to have more fun!

Auroras Jan 2-3: Adventure time with Candy!

Fell off the snow machine and got slightly run over, home after 4 am and slept until 1:00pm, but it was an amazing night chasing auroras last night. Not one, but two locations with dancing lights!

Taken in Fox, Alaska Jan 2-3, 2015. I had just got a Sony Alpha 3000 (no special lens, just the kit lens), went out for the first time with a new-to-me friend.

We drove on her machine to an amazing spot only to have barely any lights dance for us, on the way back I slipped off the snowmachine and got slightly run over by the snow machine (my own fault, really!), the skies exploded while driving back so we pulled into the pipeline viewing area and caught an amazing show but I didn’t get home until after 4am.

An amazing adventure and I think the best pics I’ve taken. I attribute it to beginners luck! DSC00517 DSC00520 DSC00522 DSC00540 DSC00545 DSC00559 DSC00561 DSC00571 DSC00579

Space for New Year’s Eve

2014 was a year of change and the beginning of some transformation. Space for Movement moved from being focused on a physical studio providing classes every night of the week, to focusing on my offerings of tribal belly dance and bhangra/bollwood classes. It was a big change and a bit scary at first, but better in the long run since I could focus on what I wanted to personally provide to my students, allowed for some personal creative growth to happen and I made it through the 200 hour yoga teacher training too!

I scaled back my offerings to just four classes per week this fall and am feeling ready to get back in the classroom with some new ideas and classes. I’m looking forward to the Winter/Spring session of classes to start and hope to see you in class next week!

Thanks for everything!

Small town living

Even though I have to park in a garage and walk a long block to work, I get lots of salutations of “Good Morning” and “Hello.” It’s starting to really grow on this used-to-be-a-big-city-girl.

Too much sugar!

Possible sign that your body is on sugar overload: eating left overs for breakfast instead of the yummy cupcake a good friend made for me!

Holiday

Three hour in the kitchen yields success!!! Made better only by annual watching of Rudolf, Scrooged and now A Christmas Story. But somehow we don’t own Gremlins, must rectify that!!

It’s not easy finding homes for them all…..

Taking in and caring for sick, hurt, abandoned or otherwise considered “throw-away animals” comes easily to me. Taking in an animal and ensuring it gets healthy again is the easy part. Finding homes for them where I feel they will get as good or better care than I give is pretty rare, which is why at one point this year I had three cats, two ferrets and eleven snakes. The deaths of two of my beloved mammals over the summer brought our small menagerie count down as well. It’s starting to feel manageable again.

Last night one of those throw-away animals, Medusa, a small ball python that would have died without my intervention and has been with me since Feb of 2014, finally found a new foster home with someone that can give her more attention than I can provide given my obligations to so many little souls. I was a bit torn about letting her go, but I’m sure she will get lots of attention that I just cannot give. And that makes me very, very happy

Snowboarding Alaska, take two.

Or as I like to call it, snowfalling!

So sore and bruised, but I had a great time. And by the end of the run (yes, we only made one run down the mountain) I was actually remembering how to stay up and control the board. But by the end of the first run, we were both tired and I had broken not one, but two binding on my dear old Burton Speed Board. That combined with the fact that we needed to be someplace by 5pm and that Sarah wanted a lesson before trying it again meant it was time to go home. Good thing since I’m not sure I could have made a second run…..

And it’s probably a good thing I didn’t look in the mirror before heading out with these on! They sure are silly looking goggles! And the headband, oh my!

Let’s get stoned

Tried a hot stone massage today. Not the fluffy stones-lying-on-your-back-with-rose-petals-all-around like wheat you see pictured for “stone massages.” More like rub really warm-almost-hot things into your muscles. Your skins is so focused on the sensory input from the heat that the stones can be used to really massages those muscles! It was awesome.

Want to try this? Go see Sherry Hilton LMT !
