Step One

Do something to get the finances in order.

Going back to a nearly full-time job in December, getting back to using my true skill set of being a programmer. No idea what that means for the studio long-term, but for now classes will continue, although I may have to shorten my own teaching come January. I’m playing this one by ear for now…..

Life is so interesting sometimes

Part of that thing applied for, which I have not heard back about yet, has brought another potential opportunity my way. Will know more after the work week is over.

And had my first student pay for our “Super Supporter” pass last night! Awesomeness!

Crossing fingers

I applied for something today. Hoping I get it. That is all the details I am giving. Well, I can say it took me three hours to do it. Forgot how pain-staking this process could be.

Never a good day to do the accounting

Every time I do accounting for the studio it just makes me sad. I’m starting to think that we will be closing for sure come May 2013. I’m not going to stop trying, but even with my very low goal of what I should bring home from the studio, I’m not making it and we are slowly descending further and further into debt. At this point in my life, given my skills, education and experience I should not be living paycheck to paycheck, much less day to day, which is how we are living currently. The financial stress I have incurred in trying to build this business is starting to really wear on my and I am starting to resent the fact that I can’t afford to bring my daughter up for a holiday visit, nor have we had an actual vacation in more than four years.

Six months from now it will change. In six months I’m either planning on emptying the studio and finding a regular full-time job again or I’m making at the least the low goal for myself with trending that shows it will improve. Either way, it will be different six month from now.

Someday, going off the grid

Pretty bad that the highlight of my day is thinking that I would honestly like to eventually move away from inhabited areas and have something like this, but made for arctic climate of Alaska, so much more enticing http://inhabitat.com/tiny-off-grid-cabin-in-maine-is-completely-self-sustaining/

The longer I am in this world, the more sad it makes me. People that take advantage of our legal system as well as those that are taken advantage of by the system. People that don’t seem to learn lessons that have been given to them over and over. People that are selfish, self-serving, or even plain cruel. People that just seem oblivious to the impact of their actions.

I have trust issues already and want to stop mis-trusting the world around me, but every time I extend myself a little to try to trust someone that I want to include in my inner circle, I end up getting burned. Maybe this is the lesson I need to learn.

Don’t mind me, I’m just feeling grumbly and more than my normal anti-social self after another interaction with my fellow humans that makes me sad to be part of a community.

First time as Full-time Sponsor

Hosted my first out of town instructor two weeks ago and put on a showcase too. I’ve all the elements before separately, but never had to deal with a situation where I was also paying for flights, food, etc. I think overall the experience was great. Also made just a small amount of money for the studio. The workshop was all in all a great experience.

As for the showcase, these are the lessons I learned:

  1. Require a sound check prior to the show. And not just at the tech meeting a week prior, which we did have for our people that would be working backstage, since we arrived and found the sound board had been changed out in between the time of the tech meeting and one of the speakers was not functioning the day of show.
  2. Require a light check too. While we knew our only options for lights were on or off, for whatever reason some of the lights were not functioning and/or were not pointed correctly so most of the dancers were in the shadows.
  3. Lock the theater doors or have someone guard so that people cannot come in early and sit down. We had not planned to open doors until 7:30, but folks starting wandering in around 7:15 and I think this was half our problem because we lost our chance to let our tech folks do the necessary checks they wanted to do.
  4. Be clear with performers about stage usage prior to show as well as what is acceptable time to clear out from the venue because waiting around for 30 minutes post-show for dancers to collect their stuff and get moving was a bit tiresome. I had to wait until everyone cleared out so I could be sure the doors were locked and we had group dinner plans to get to. I rarely get to eat prior to a show, so I really wanted to get to the restaurant!

When it’s so bad it’s good…

Going to start bad movie night part two in just a short while. We are going to watch the second half of “Stephen King’s Storm of the Century.”

Bad t.v. coupled with beer and popcorn works wonders and helps shake off a bad mood! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0135659/

Alaska, boilers, and appointments

Up at the crack of dawn to be ready for a boiler tune-up appointment that I set nearly a month ago and instead of picking up the phone to hear them say, “we’re on our way” I get a call saying they probably won’t even make it to me today due to a bunch of emergency call-outs. Good thing I already have tomorrow day off…..

No stopping it now……

House is cleaner, it will have to suffice. Need to finish the laundry so the linens are clean, have a quick shower, then back to that darn choli for a couple hours. Pet food run, then to the airport since Asharah gets here today! Oh, and then class for three hours tonight.

It’s good to be busy, but perhaps not so busy would be nice too. Who’s kidding whom? I seem to always do this to myself.

The end, and a beginning

Yesterday we finally buried Sam and Baby in the yard. The day they died was just a really long one for me where I didn’t get home until after 10pm and in the last week or so our schedules didn’t really mesh to be able to bury them until then, so it took us a little more than a week before we had the chance to do the sad task. They are together forever now.

Yesterday was also the same day that Casper and Julio stayed together all day in the playpen. Since being introduced to each other five days ago they have liked each other pretty well and have been playing like rough young boys which I took as a good sign. However, ferrets do play quite rough and the boys play really rough which means usually one of them (Casper) ends up being dragged by the nape of the neck by the other (Julio), common for ferret play, but since they are still new to each other there were a few episodes of screams and hissing about the rough play in those five days prior. Yesterday there were a couple of short outbursts and complaints, but since we were home with them we quickly broke them up and they went back to just roughhousing in a more playful way. Very happy to have new fuzzies in my life; they really do add light to my daily routine.
